The Cool Schools Programme aims to:
• Help individuals develop life long conflict management skills
• Focus on building positive relationships with others
• Create win/win situations for students, teachers, parents, caregivers and the wider community
• Provide life skills for school, home and the workplace
• Empower students to help other students
• Be proactive, helping to prevent bullying and other levels of conflict
• Provide a better learning environment
• Encourage students to develop the value of service leadership
The Cool Schools Programme develops key skills such as:
• Active listening
• Using “I” statements and affirmations
• Recognising different types of responses to conflict
• Effective questioning
• The role of the mediator
• The mediation process (including a process for junior students)
How do you become a Cool Schools Mediator?
To be a Cool Schools Mediator you need to have the following qualities;
- good listening skills
- be able to write clearly
- be reliable
- responsible
- respectful
- effective quesitoning skills
- motivated to help others
Do I have to take part in any training?
Yes. All candidates must go through a comprehensive training programme which will help them develop the skills to be a Cool Schools Mediator in our school. Total training will take 2 days.
Am I on duty every day?
No. Students are on a roster and choose the days they wish to be rostered on and who they would like to be rostered on with.
Do we wear a uniform?
Yes. Cool Schools Mediators at Rosebank School wear a blue Cool Schools vest with a blue Cool Schools cap.
