We have begun the process of becoming a Wastewise school.
The first step was a Rubbish Audit. This took place in June. The Eco – warrior students helped sort through the rubbish and now have a good idea of what can and can't be recycled. Mr Sperber, our Wastewise Schools Facilitator, commended our Eco Warriors and described them as a fabulous, hard working bunch!
Here are some of the results from our audit:
- Almost 62% of the waste by weight was food scraps. It weighed 16 kilograms.
- The number of 'crinkly food packets' (for example chippy packets) was VERY high – approximately 450 packets.

The Eco Warriors are now looking at the results and are making an action plan so that we can improve our composting and recycling, and have healthier lunches.
We now have food bins in our classrooms and have started up a School Compost Bin. We have also begun "Litterless Lunches". This will happen every Wednesday during term 4. We are already seeing an increase in the number of children bringing "litterless lunches " to school.
